Existing hotels in St. Petersburg Russia have been modernised with efforts to bring them up to Western standards. While other hotels have emerged through private investment companies and established international hotel chains.
Old St. Petersburg hotels may have undergone modernisation and refurbishment to a good standard, however the hotel staff often unfortunately have not. An apparent complaint by many foreign visitors staying in St. Petersburg hotels is the service, or rather, the lack of it! However, things seem to be improving - there is hope.
Russian managed hotels do not follow standards for awarding hotel star ratings as used and accepted by the West (i.e. according to services and condition of amenities etc…) but tend to be generously self-assessed.
